Part of playing an active role in your wellbeing means enhancing your personal safety skills. Together with UT Police, VigilantMD provides students with essential knowledge and practical strategies to stay safe while navigating unfamiliar environments, specifically for away rotations and new residencies.

Considerations when choosing your next place of residence:

  • Research crime rates/trends
  • Visit the area in the daytime and nighttime
  • Look for well-lit entranceways, pathways, and parking lots
  • Choose buildings/homes with security features (or install them) – secure entries, gates, deadbolts, and window locks
  • Visible and functional fire exits, alarms, and security cameras
  • Distance to potential noise and nightlife (bars/clubs)
  • Distance to hospitals, police & fire stations
  • Talk to neighbors before deciding
  • Look for signs of a healthy environment (clean shared spaces, minimal maintenance issues, etc)

Attending the self-defense seminar was especially timely, considering I’ll be on a professional experience this summer, relying solely on public transit and walking—modes of transportation that naturally leave one exposed to the vulnerabilities of the world. I left the seminar equipped with foundational teachings that empower me to walk more confidently in this world as a woman, with an armor of knowledge and trained repetition on how to protect myself in a moment of crisis, and that is invaluable. The energy was beautiful, too. Cheering on women from different walks of life as we discovered our strength within and challenged one another to do hard things with courage and boldness created a powerful atmosphere.
