MLS student attends first Women of Laboratory Science Summit

When Carolina Vega learned about the first Women of Laboratory Science Summit, she immediately sensed it was an opportunity too good to pass up.

So, Vega, a medical laboratory sciences bachelor’s student in the School of Health Professions at The University of Texas at San Antonio, registered for the conference, which was held Oct. 18 in Alexandria, Virginia. What she found was a camaraderie and level of support among attendees that has inspired her to become even more involved in her future profession. In particular, she appreciated hearing from other attendees about how they navigated different situations in their careers and how to be a leader.

“That sort of connection makes you feel welcome and you want to be more engaged,” Vega said.

The WLSS is a new conference offered by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science with the goal of fostering a network among women in laboratory science to share experiences, exchange knowledge and advance leadership.

Vega’s efforts to attend the conference didn’t go unnoticed by her program leadership.

“We are incredibly proud of Carolina for demonstrating such initiative and professionalism by attending the ASCLS Women of Laboratory Science Summit 2025,” said Division of Medical Laboratory Sciences Program Director and Assistant Professor Terri Murphy-Sanchez, MS, MLS, CSMLS, ASCPCM. “Her engagement in this national event reflects the leadership, curiosity and commitment to excellence that define our program. It’s inspiring to see our students representing °®ÎŰ´«Ă˝ on a stage that celebrates the future of women leaders in laboratory medicine.”
